Being a man would require you to know how to tie a necktie right? But women should learn how this is done too. Neckties can be a fashion statement in women’s fashion too. In fact, the Jerry Garcia Neck Tie Demon Halloween Extra Long novelty tie can be quite the fun idea for Halloween.

Tying your necktie is quite one of the most basic skills you’ll need to bring with you. If you know how it is supposed to be done, you can be more creative with the tying thereafter. Here, we will be showing you the simplest and most popular way in tying a necktie so that you wouldn’t be that much oblivious on how it is done.

A Four-in-Hand knot is probably one of the most popular and original ways to tie neckties which we can trace as far as that in mid-19th century. Although it might have come a long way, it still remains to be one of the oldest yet commonly used. This manner of tying was started by British horsemen since they needed a simple way to tie their scarves with their free hand while they hold on to the reigns of four horses with the other hand. That is why it was coined to be the Four-in-Hand knot.

Its small and asymmetrical look is indicated for narrow collar spreads in a shirt, the wearer is tall and a small knot would be needed to use only less of the length of the ties, for ties that come in solid colors, and for complimenting the British-striped neckties in its traditional knot.

So, how is it done?

Before tying, ensure that the broad side of the tie hangs low than the narrow end after you have closed your top buttons and flipped the collars up.

Then, wrap the broad end of it behind and around the narrow end with one hand. This would keep it from slipping out of place.

Now, hold the unfinished knot with your two fingers after you wrapped the broad end around and over the front of the narrow end. Take the broad end, loop it through the loop on the neck but be sure to leave a loop at the front portion. This part would be necessary to pull the broad end through for tightening purposes. Pull the broad end through the loop you created, tighten it to the desired fit and adjust it so it stays at the center of your collar. You may now flip down the collar of your shirt after doing all of the above.

Oh no, you’ve noticed that it’s too short or too long. Easy, un-tie it and tie it again. You will feel where you need to start the knot again and use as reference point the stitching at the back of your tie.

If this does not help, you may have to get other extra long ties made for taller men your size or tall women or for wearing them as a belt. Ties should be the right length. After the Four-in-Hand knot, its tip should be in close proximity to the center of the belt buckle. Regular ties come at 58” length and would be a good fit for men up to 6’3” tall. For those men taller than this height, you may need something that is 3 to 4 inches longer.
